Kia has become one of the best-selling brands in India with just two products in the lineup – the Seltos and the Carnival. The South Korean manufacturer is now working to launch its all-new product in the Indian market and their upcoming product will be launched in the sub-4m compact SUV segment. Kia showcased the all-new Sonet SUV concept at the 2020 Auto Expo and the car will be launched in the Indian market in August.
According to ACI, the all-new Kia Sonet will officially launch in August. The new car will be launched in a booming segment that saw the launch of two all-new products last year. Hyundai launched the all-new Venue in the same segment last year while Mahindra launched the all-new XUV300. Kia Sonet will take on the highly competitive vehicles like the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon and Ford EcoSport too.
This will be the most affordable Kia to be launched in the Indian market and will be the brand’s first-ever sub-4m compact SUV in the segment. It will get the signature Kia styling with the Tiger Nose grille at the front. The Sonet also gets sculpted bonnet and sharp LED headlamps with integrated LED DRLs. The Sonet also comes with a done-tone bonnet with meshed grille and red accents with faux skid plates that make it look much more intimidating and muscular.
Kia announced that the production version of the Sonet will carry forward 90% of the design of the concept version. Which means that apart from a few features like the 18-inch alloy wheels, flush door handles and a few more things, the Sonet will offer almost similar styling to the concept version of the car. It will be based on the same platform that underpins the Hyundai Venue.
Even the engine options offered by both the cars will likely to remain the same. It will get a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. Kia will offer a 6-speed manual transmission with all the three engine options as standard. Also, the car will introduce the new intelligent manual transmission, which will be the first semi-automatic transmission in the affordable cars in India. The transmission will not have any clutch pedal while the users will be able to change the gears manually. This will be a cheaper alternative to the automated manual transmissions. Kia will also offer a 7-speed DCT and a diesel-automatic combination.
The Sonet will also offer a range of first-in-segment features including a massive 10.25-inch infotainment system along with a speaker system from Bose. It will be available only with the fully-loaded top-end versions.
