Gurinder Chadha’s aunt succumbs to coronavirus complications, family chanted Sikh prayers during final moments

The Indian-origin British film-maker took to social media to confirm that her aunt passed away in a UK hospital.
Sharing three pictures with her beloved ‘bhuaji’, Hindi term for brother’s sister, revealed that no one from her family could be with her during her last breath.
Her aunt, who had survived the Partiton of India, FaceTimed her family during her final moments. The aunt’s children chanted Sikh prayers as two nurses of the Surrey hospital held her hand, and her soul departed.
The ‘Bend it like Beckham’ director thanked the healthcare professionals at National Health Service, and called the two nurses heroes for making her aunt’s passing humane.
Chadha has been awarded the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for her service to the cinema.
She is also known for films like ‘Viceroy’s House’ (2017), ‘Bhaji on the Beach’ (1993) and ‘Blinded by the Light’ (2019).
