World Cup-winning India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh on Thursday said picking MS Dhoni for the T20 World Cup shouldn’t be a difficult decision if the wicketkeeper-batsman makes himself available for selection.
Harbhajan Singh said MS Dhoni is one of the greatest players and captains and his experience will come in handy for the team at the T20 World Cup, scheduled for October-November in Australia.
Speculations are rife about MS Dhoni’s international cricket future after the delay in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. The 13th edition of IPL was seen as a possible gateway for Dhoni to return to international cricket as the team management, including head coach Ravi Shastri, did not rule out his comeback.
MS Dhoni, 38, has not played competitive cricket since India’s exit at the 2019 World Cup. However, the Chennai Super Kings captain made his intentions clear when he turned up for a pre-season IPL training camp in Chennai in March.
“How do you judge Dhoni? Do you see his IPL form or give him respect and consider the fact that he is one of India’s greatest players and captains. The guy has done a lot for Indian cricket,” Harbhajan Singh told IANS news agency.
“MS Dhoni is a big big player. He doesn’t need to be told if he is capable or not. So I don’t think you need to ponder too much about it. If you think you need Dhoni, and if he is available, you pick him.”
Only recently, Chennai Super Kings star batsman Suresh Raina said MS Dhoni did not show any signs of ageing and that he was hitting the big sixes at will, as usual during the training camp in Chennai.
‘Hardik has to be in the T20 World Cup squad’
Meanwhile, Harbhajan Singh also said Hardik Pandya is a must-have in the T20 World Cup squad despite his long absence from the senior national team due to injury concerns. The Mumbai Indians all-rounder has not played international cricket since September 2019 as he underwent back surgery to treat a longstanding injury.
Hardik Pandya returned to the Indian side for a 3-match ODI series against South Africa at home in March. However, he was not able to get match time as the series was suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic after the 1st ODI in Dharamsala was washed out on March 12.
“Hardik Pandya has not played after the World Cup. But I can give you in writing that if he is fit and irrespective of whether the IPL takes place or not, when the team will be made he will be in the team because if the team needs to maintain combination, he has to be in the team.
“You need these kind of players. So some players cannot be judged on IPL form. It is for them who are not proven players,” Harbhajan said.
